The Emmett High varsity softball team unleashed some pent-up Spring Break energy last week with a dominant performance at the plate to sweep a pair of non-conference games.
On Wednesday the Huskies traveled to Boise to face the Brave and jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first. Despite the early lead, Boise stayed on Emmett’s heals, trailing 4-3 heading to the top of the sixth. That’s when the onslaught began. A three-run sixth followed up with a five-run seventh saw the Huskies pull away for the 12-3 win.
Emmett not only benefited from 11 hits, they took advantage of a dozen Brave errors to rack up eight unearned runs. Katy Martinez drove in three runs, going four for four at the plate including a home run. Oakley Scheibe went the distance in the pitching circle, scattering six hits while striking out six.
Saturday’s road trip to Fruitland was all Emmett offense. The Huskies broke out to a 5-0 lead in the first and never looked back rolling to a 17-0 shutout of the Grizzlies.
Again Martinez was a perfect three for three at the plate but she got plenty of help in the 14-hit Huskie assault. Kayla Vahlberg drove in three runs on two hits. Vahlberg cracked a home run and was joined by Allie Reynolds with a round-tripper. Reynolds was 3 for 3 at the plate. Raegyn Dupree also had two hits in the romp.
Scheibe’s performance in the circle was just as dominant as the Huskies behind the plate. The freshman pitcher gave up only a single hit and struck out a dozen batters.
Emmett was supposed to open the Southern Idaho Conference season last week against Vallivue but had that game rained out. It has been rescheduled for Saturday, April 13 in Emmett.
This week the Huskies will be seeing their first conference play with a Tuesday home game against Columbia, a Wednesday road trip to Ridgevue and then a visit from Bishop Kelly on Friday.
